Kelly Wearstler's Fern Tree for $28 a yard!

Last Friday I made a quick trip out to the amazing fabric store Haute in Marshall, VA (*no longer in Middleburg. New address is 8393 West Main St. Marshall, 540.364.1221) hoping to find fabric for the family room couch I'm having reupholstered. JACKPOT - Kelly Wearstler's Fern Tree for Schumacher in charcoal grey/ivory at $28 a yard. (Later I read on Pink Wallpaper that this fabric retails for over $200 a yd)

I had a brief moment of hestitation so I'm so glad my friend Anne was there to encourage me to get it - especially since a number of other shoppers started eyeing my prize. Now the only question was would there be at least 12+ yards? I wasn't sure as the bolt didn't seem that large. After 5 yards we found the fabric was cut. My heart started pounding a bit (I know - it's "only" fabric) Well we got to 12 yards and I saw there was more so I kinda shouted out "I'll take it all!" I felt like I was in a casino putting all my chips on Red. My winnings - 18 3/8 yards. Although my husband reminded me it technically wasn't a "winning" but a purchase. Don't quite agree with that...

So now, here's my dilemma. Which way do I run the fabric? Vertical or Horizontal??
( Horizontal Repeat - 3.5", Vertical Repeat - 18.875")

This is not my couch (mine is more straight lined) but it gives an idea. So, what do you think?

(image of couch via Pink Wallpaper. Sorry for the lack of links. I'm posting from my ipad and forgot how to do this)

What a find!!! Personally, I'd go with vertical, but either way, you're going to have an outstanding sofa.

My vote is for vertical if you have a low back sofa or horizontal for a high back.

I would go vertical. (same as on cushions)

I definitely prefer vertical, even before I scrolled down and saw the cushions! Beautiful, beautiful fabric. Nicolexx

I do love the pattern, but for an entire couch, hmmm.
Prefer pillows or a drape. I love a solid couch...just something to further add to your design dilemma.

Funny, I posted about this fabric last week too. What an incredible find! Haute is on my "to do" list as I am trying to find an affordable houndstooth fabric for a gilder in my son's nursery....the one I love is from Shumacher and at over 70/yard net not the most practical for its purpose. Personally, I'd run the pattern vertical. Incredible find!

SCORE!!!!!! Congrats on this great "win";)! Isn't that funny, I do the same thing... hesitate when you make a great find! What is that?!!
I bet it would look great both ways, but with all the other elements in your room would it benefit your design more by going horizontal or vertical? In other words, do you have say, strong vertical paneling lines on your walls that you need to balance by going horizonal with the fabric? that kind of thing?!
Can't wait to see the new sofa!

I would run the fabric horizontally - I love the unexpectedness of a horizontal line. I think it is so fresh. Great score!

I'd say it's a win, if the wallet came out or not!!

What does the room say about the orientation of the fabric?...it may be a tool to bring your eye outward or upward (high celings).

SCORE!!

Best,
Michelle

What a touch choice! But I like the vertical -- I also love the light-colored reverse of that fabric -- way to go!

I like it run both ways. I think vertical is more sophisticated & horizontal a little more whimsical and fun. So lucky for you. Very, very expensive fabric. Have a great weekend.

Vertically - All the way. Ferns like to go up and down - Sometimes we get unexpected and beautiful results when we follow nature not lines.
