Mary Steenburgen's Rooms & Gardens

Not sure I know the definition of California Casual but my version of it is synonomous with the furniture, fabrics and accessories of Rooms & Gardens. In 2006 the actress Mary Steenburgen partnered with Rooms & Gardens founders Eric and Jamie Voulgaris to expand from their original stores in Santa Barbara and Summerland and open a store in Santa Monica.

This room 's neutral, warm background lets the red accents pop and draws your eye to the strong colored landscapes in similar gold frames.
The candle in the green jug, with a bit of tied raffia, is a great touch.

Strong, large scaled pattern on simple, small scale chairs - great combo.

Love this chair. Check out the superb matching of the paisley pattern on this slipcover. It was fortuitous that I saw this oversized chair because I was this-close to getting rid of a very dated (think 80's oversized) english arm club chair. Comfortable but ugly. Everytime I looked at it it reminded me that I never should have bought it - markdown or not! I think I could resurrect it if I pursued a slipcover with this kind of styling - even letting the legs peek out to breathe new life into it.

I like the chair too -- love the big squishy ones. I also like the way she used patterned fabric on the floor lamp. I've been seeing a lot of patterned shades, which have come roaring back, very happily for me.

Go for it with yours..I'm sure they have a seamstrees they'd recommend.
I 'm crazy over the bed. The drama of the dark stained wood against the quiet fabric...great marrying of style.

I don't know why but revealing the legs on sofas and chairs makes them look fresher and more contemporary.....enjoy the weekend, xv.

Since I live so close to this shop, it is one of the first ones that I visit when I start a project. Brooke is incredibly helpful (and I love her name. Ha!).
So glad you featured this wonderful store.

Gosh, I love the poofy paisley armchair. Just LOVE that fabric (and yes, it is perfectly matched - how observant of you). It looks like a John Robshaw fabric. Love it!

LOVE those green and white upholstered chairs. It really modernizes them, doesn't it? And no skirts - also very modern and fresh. Thank you!

I love Rooms and Gardens! It's a very well merchandised shop and it totally has that California cool vibe you mentioned. As a side note--I'm enjoying your recap of all of the design shops you visited in LA! Was just there myself last month and stopped in most of these shops too....they're all so inspirational!
