Sills, Huniford & a Terrific Design Book from 2003

I almost titled this post an "...Overlooked Design Book" but then thought maybe it's just me that hasn't discovered Dwellings: Living with Great Style by Stephen Sills and James Huniford until recently. The book was released in 2003 while they were both partners in Sills Huniford Associates. After 25 years together, they went their separate ways in the summer of 2008. I have found myself returning to this book frequently for inspiration and enjoyment.
Side by side marble tubs in a bathroom floored with Moroccan style tiles. Beautiful. I'll let the rest of these photos speak for themselves. (these images via Stephen Sills Associates)

The book is sans dust jacket and has the most wonderful gray linen cover. When you're not reading it, it looks quite lovely left about. For more images of their respective work you can visit Stephen Sills Associates or James Huniford.

I have always admired this book. The placement of the objects look as though they were one part organic and the other part staged. The guide said at the NY Botanical garden, thousands of bulbs are thrown up in the air and where they land, that is where they are planted. It makes it look more natural.

although it's a 2003 book, the styling is still quite "in" isn't it!

I'll be running out to find this one! I love S&H...about 15 years ago, they did this amazing half sphere concrete tub in a penthouse bathroom...I still have that image in my file...it's one of my favorite rooms. Oh, I'm so excited...a new book!

Best,
Michelle

When I see photos of rooms as lovely as these, I feel inclined to put my household belonging in a collective pile and put a match to it and start over.
What tranquil spaces. Thanks for posting them.

Hi Michelle

This is one of my favorite design books. I agree with you about the "sans dust jacket" - it sits on my coffee table on top of a stack of others and is distinctive in it's soft gray cover. The content is rich, and I refer to it often. Love their combined style then and now I am off the check out their individual websites. Thanks for the reminder!

Love the "little grey book" as it's known in my home. Just a wonderful read when you need quiet time and a cup of tea...
