Washington Spaces Magazine Closes

Folio is reporting on their site that Washington Spaces magazine's current November/December issue will be their last. The article by Jason Fell quotes the CEO and president Becky Loker of Greater Washington Publishing as attributing the closing to the “current economic climate." The article also noted that it is not clear "what might come of the magazine's web site."

I am shocked. Washington Spaces was a high quality, regional shelter magazine and this is a blow to local coverage of area designers and builders. I'm also a fan of Jennifer Sergent's blog on Washington Spaces and have always found her posts to be interesting, informative and written with a sense of fun and passion for design! Her most recent post was on the designer trees created for the upcoming Georgetown Jingle annual event. This is Jennifer's picture of David Iatesta's imaginative driftwood tree.
Again, very disheartened to hear this news.

Sadly, yet another stylish shelter magazine victim of this sour economy (Sigh!)

At least My Notting Hill isn't going anywhere. :-)

COME ON! I'm so bummed.

If it hadn't been for DC Spaces' art issue, I wouldn't have had the nerve to email an artist, which lead to a trip to his gallery and a purchase. I was so intimidated and they got me over that.

The eye candy in those pages has always been fantastic. I'm so sad.

yes -so was I! The demise was the buzz at the design center last week :-( When are we going to start to hear some good news?!

NO! I love Washington Spaces. Every time I come in town I pick up a copy...I guess I should have subscribed...I wish some of these magazines would experiment with a digital version instead of closing entirely.

Good grief...another publishing death. Where will it end? What will we read in bed? Much as I love the blogs it's hard to curl up with a laptop.

Hi folks -- Michele, thank you so much for this post, and to commenters, for all your kind words. I'm pleased to tell you all that I will continue my blog independently, and I hope to have it up by January. The Jan/Feb issue of Spaces WILL go up online, although it won't be printed, so you have one more new issue to look forward to. It was to be our American Craftsmanship issue, and we were really excited about it, so stay tuned. Thanks again, guys -- Jennifer Sergent (and if you want to reach me personally, I'm at jennifer@sergentdesign.com)

It's so sad how many wonderful magazines are closing. The creativity is dying or at least very hard to find.

I'm so sad about this. At least we have other resources - things like this are going to make blogs like yours even more important.

An unsettling rash that's quickly turning near pandemic for art and fashion magazines. To say it is troublesome would be a gross understatement for those of us who care about such things. For what is it they say, first goes the art then the civilization.
Warmest regards.

The news of Washington Spaces closing was heartbreaking, yet another devastating blow added to the long list of others that have succumbed.
I REALLY also enjoyed ALL of Jennifer Sergent's blog posts, so was more saddened at the thought of no longer able to read her posts.
But, when I was reading the comments and saw that Jennifer will continue up her fabulous blog, I must admit, I did a little whoop of joy. :)
Thank you to Jennifer for all her hard work and all that you have done for the blogging community. We look forward to your return.

Hi Michelle, I Wanted to email you directly but the last correspondence had the pesky no reply tag so--wanted to let you know that today's post links to your fantastic Virtual Shower gifts, which was an inspiring and brilliant post-I so enjoy your site! Many thanks and hope to speak to you soon, Barbara

I wasn't a fan of Washington Spaces nor Metropolitan Home, so no tears here. In fact, I will bring out the Champagne when Architectural Digest deservedly bites the dust. The economy is only part of the equation-paper is dead. Domino and Southern Accents were both sad losses.

I love Washington Spaces, it's sad to see it close. But I have a question regarding subscriptions. I have just signed up for 2 years subscription in Oct 2009 which is pretty recent and I have not receive any issues at all. They charged my credit card and I have not receive any notice whatsoever, I just found out the magazine closing from another blog. I kind of feel a little blindsided. I really don't understand how they can take subscriptions when the magazine know they are closing. How will I be able to get my money back? I'm sad and heartbroken, I finally subscribed and was looking forward to 2010 with all the amazing issues, now left with nothing..

Joanna - Hi. I would contact the parent company - Greater Washington Publishing - about a refund. They just posted their final blog entry and I tried to leave a comment about that but it seems not to be accepting comments.

I emailed someone from the Greater Washington Publishing shortly after my last post and got a response. They were really nice and easy about it, and sent me my refund without trouble. So the issue is resolved. Thanks you so much, fortunately it wasn't as much trouble as I would expect.
