On the Diagonal & Earthquake, really

Last week while visiting Seattle's Great Jones Home, I noticed these great tete-a-tete pieces. So interesting - have you ever used one in your home?

In keeping with the diagonal theme, Barry Dixon has these two chairs at angles - creating an unexpected look and opportunities for multiple conversation areas.

Stefan of Architect Design recently showcased the Hampton Show House room designed by Donald Schermerhon, where he noted the diagonal placement of the furniture aided the traffic flow.

Re: THE EARTHQUAKE in DC, of all places - I never would have guessed that I would be in Dallas, my husband in NY, and my teenage kids home by themselves when a 5.8 earthquake hit. They called me from the street in front of the house, surrounded by neighbors, clearly a bit shaken. Bookcases fell over and pictures fell from the walls but my kids were safe and sound. And, that's the only thing that matters.

Hi Michele - I'm glad your family is okay. We felt the quake in Boston yesterday--very surreal.

I think a diagonal provides a sort of "ying-yang" to a home....and as for the earthquake, we felt it too in our son's dorm room....we always knew he was a mover and a shaker!
Glad it was just a shake and not a major quake and no one was hurt.

Interesting diagonals. I always find diagonal stuff makes me feel dizzy in a room. Glad you are all okay - I have been wondering about all you blog buddies of mine in the area. I experienced an earthquake of this magnitude once and it was definitely scary (and unexpected). Glad the kids are safe.
Envying all your travel and decor shopping, but I know travel can be a drag when it's a necessity. At least you get to go to good places..

So glad your children are alright. I live in Muskoka Ontario Canada and our house shook for 3 minutes all the way up here...cannot imagine being closer.

Isn't that the way it happens? No wonder I'm always a nervous wreck every time I leave my kids at home! THIS is exactly what I must be thinking subconsciously! Thank goodness they are ok! You're right, Things are things....

I've tried diagonals in the past, though not a tete a tete. I prefer straighter angles - makes me feel more grounded.
So glad to hear the kids are ok - who would expect an earthquake in DC?

So happy to hear the kids are alright, all that shaking must have rattled them for sure (and Mom's nerves too!). Love the diagonal placement and the tete-to-tete chairs. Hoe it stays nice and calm there. XO

We were in Fredericksburg when the earthquake hit and it was a novelty. However, I must admit that the aftershocks are more frightening… we live in Lake Anna about 3 miles from the epicenter of the quake. The aftershocks in the middle of the night are a bit overwhelming.

I have owned a tete a tete and, although I don't have a spot to use one now, I'm sorry I let it go. Mine was a country primitive piece created of hand turned pine - a back with slats, lovely tapered arms and stretchers and a split oak seat. It was a great way to tie two small tables together when hosting a dinner party. It was in my first married home which had a gigantic fireplace. The tete a tete sat in front of the fire.

That must have been a scary time for your kiddoes. We even experienced an earthquake in CO, but not our part. What's going on?! For the most part not sure the diagonal placement is for me....Interesting observation, tho.

I remember 10 years ago at least when placing furniture on the diagonal was all the rage....not so much now but it can look delicious if done right I think. So glad everyone was OK with the earthquake. How scary.
