Narrow Kitchen Islands

On Mother's Day I received a camera and as soon as I solve my computer problem I'll be able to post an update on my kitchen. If you could see a pic you'd notice that my kitchen, even with the basement staircase removed, is still too narrow for the round kitchen table I had in the space since Thanksgiving.

Right now the placeholder, my grandmother's drop-leaf shaker table, is the perfect size only when the leaves are down - 2o"W x 42"L. This renders it pretty much useless as a sit-down table but it's great for food prep except that it's table height!

So, now I am on the hunt for a very narrow kitchen island. Here are just a few inspiration pics. My preference is for one that looks like the one above but with a stone top and open for storage as opposed to the cupboard style of the last one. (Above by Ili Nilsson, Atlanta Homes Magazine)

  3. I think it's going to be hard to find the perfect piece. I say go custom. Maybe look for some really cool legs and have a cabinetmaker build exactly what you want.

  4. I bet if you found a great console table and covered it in butcher block wood or wrapped it in stainless steel, you could get the total look you wanted, semi-custom (semi-homemade LOL). i cannot wait to see pics :)

  7. I just posted about this very same thing. I found a little table on Craigslist last week that is 17" x 36". Just the right size for my narrow kitchen. Nothing bigger would work. I'm trying to figure out how to make it taller right now. I think Steve is right....have a cabinet maker create exactly what you want. I just lucked in to mine.

  9. I am on just the same hunt! I have been looking at vintage sideboards and consoles, because sometimes they have the height you need, but finding exactly the right thing always requires a bit of luck!

  10. I spotted some narrow islands - Williams Sonoma and Crate & Barrell had a stone top one that looked great.

  11. Hey Michele - Maybe find / build one with (lockable) wheels? Since your kitchen is narrow, you will have the option to remove it for flow if needed. Looking forward to seeing your kitchen. Have a great weekend, Loi
