Brian McCarthy: Luminous Interiors

There's a bit of mystery when it comes to designer Brian McCarthy. When you head to his site, you'll see some gorgeous images on rotation but to see the complete portfolio you'll need a password.  It's like having a bite of a hot fudge sundae and then having it taken away.  That's where Luminous Interiors: The Houses of Brian McCarthy comes in to play - his first book and a chance to see much more of his work.  While this 250+ book is full of beautiful photographs of incredibly luxe and detailed interiors, including many double page spreads (which I love), Brian also shares a tremendous amount of background about the architectural and design choices.  So while these interiors are decidedly high-end, as a reader you're also picking up on ideas, tips and lots of inspiration.

The Bronze crocodile consoles by Claude Lalanne flank the entrance to the dining room in his NYC apartment. The door heights were raised to enlarge the feeling of the space.  To see a past incarnation of this apartment on New York Social Diary, head here.

The master bedroom of his country home. The greek key light is stunning.

Notice the translucent glass set in front of the window - allowing for light, privacy and a place to mount mirrors.  Very smart and chic.

These elegant X back chairs are designed by Brian McCarthy.  He notes they were influenced by Gilvert Poillerat.

Thank you to Sarah Burningham of Little Bird Publicity for the opportunity to review
Luminous Interiors: The Houses of Brian McCarthy   As Bunny Williams noted in the forward, this will be a classic.  So true.

What beautiful work. And I love that they added tips and info that anyone can apply to their interior, no matter what their budget. I'm adding this to my Christmas wish list.

I am dying for the kitchen. I love when design books offer tips. I think design is a science that is applied artfully. You have the most extensive library, Michele.

I also loved the Greek key pendant. A big step up the Ballard flush mount.

I wonder if the kitchen with the X-back chairs is in the same house with the living room with the Milton Avery painting. It's an unusual but lovely color palette.

It's always nice to be introduced to a new design book. I love the work shown here, especially the turquoise silk slipper chairs back to back.
