Rolling into week 2 of the One Room Challenge and I'm feeling rosy cheeked and cheerful. The craze of Week 5 is still off somewhere in the future. The walls and ceiling of my master bedroom makeover have been painted Benjamin Moore Ancient Ivory. Nice to check that off the list! I've found a matte gray velvet for the headboard at my go-to fabric source, Haute in Arlington. It's a beautiful mid-tone gray with a pretty purple undertone that I think pairs really well with the Donghia Stella fabric I have on hand for the drapes. (found years ago in Baltimore for an amazing $4.59 a yard)
You may remember from Week One I mentioned the wall across from the bed will have 14" deep Ikea Pax cabinets to replace the storage from the mismatched dressers. Since there is a vent on that wall that can't be covered, there will be open shelving on the top half of one of the units. The back will be covered with this pretty gray grasscloth I found at Sherwin-Williams. Here it is paired with the velvet and the drapery fabric.

NOW FOR MY DILEMMA - How to hang the drapes?
Here's the situation:
- I really want to keep the Ikea blackout shades as they do a great job and the pulley system makes them easy to lower. Previous plain shades and bamboo shades that were pull-down, either by hand or by cord, have failed on these windows due to the width. (Below, a reminder of the Before)
-There is no molding around the window, only a window sill.
What do you think of going with a pelmut box in the same drape fabric to cover the Ikea roller shade and provide some structure?

ReplyDeleteI like the pelmet idea. If you could incorporate the grasscloth to cover it, I think it would look great with the drapery material. I think it needs to be a different material. But either way, still like the pelmet idea. I love room darkening shades in a bedroom. It's a must for me.

ReplyDeleteIt's going to look great! If you applied a trim to the black out shade maybe it would make it prettier and you'd want to hide it less? Pelmets seem a tad formal for the bedroom but very beautiful if you decide to go that way! I love seeing a pretty drapery rod and rings like your last photo.

ReplyDeleteI think the pelmet idea is a good one as long as you keep it simple. Covering it with the same grasscloth would add texture without business!

The grasscloth!! so good...and color is so rich. I love it. I like Linda's suggestion of a decorative fake bamboo shade to cover and the curtain in front. I have always loved that look.

ReplyDeleteI, personally, love the pelmet box. Because there is no ceiling detail, I think the pelmet would add visual interest (way up high).

ReplyDeleteIf you are making your own DIY pelmet boxes, I used board insulation for mine instead of the traditional wood. Much lighter when they're hung than wood, and you seriously cannot tell the difference. Since these were my first DIY with pelmets I pressed the easy button and made them square, with quilt batting, and beige linen fabric, then I used large square design pins to add interest. So the downside to using the insulation board? I couldn't use the smaller nailheads that come in yards, due to the pin part not being long enough to go through the spongy insulation board. The board kept spitting them out. Then I hung the pelmets onto the upper window casing with L brackets. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteHmmm interesting situation. I think I might go with the pelmet. Or maybe a faux roman shade to go over the real shade? IDK. It'll be interesting to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteI love the cornice board idea. If you want a less formal window treatment but still want to hide the blackout shade, you can place a faux bamboo blind/ faux roman shade in front of the Ikea shade. Hope that helps. Can't wait to see progress/updates next week!

I'm on the pelmet bandwagon! That is what I am doing in my kitchen. I like the tailored finish detail they lend to a room without being too fussy. Loving your textures.

ReplyDeleteA pelmet box adds a more polished/refined look ... I think an attractive rod and rings will look perfect too. You will be able to decide when more elements and textures are added to the redo. Loving your fabric choices and I adore grass cloth and have it in my living room.

I love the pelmet box idea. I can picture it in the same fabric as the drapery or in another fabric. Maybe the headboard fabric? It really brings out the lilac in the fabric. I see it behind the rod and rings for a unique spin on the traditional pelmet box.
